Finally finished after four trips, several hundred snapshots, three start-overs and other delays. Sometimes these projects just happen that way, The people at the arboretum are fantastic to work with, though. This is truly a green wonderland, that you can't possibly see in one day.
The Dogwood Collection is only one of many curated living plant "galleries", and will be coming into full springtime regalia very soon, along with The Azalea Collection, notably, and everything else generally. This is the ninth piece we've done, just completed this morning.
If you're down towards DC this spring do stop in and bring a picnic.

Must be an extraordinary spectacle, when all the Cornus ( I think this is the latin word for Dogwood) bloom, wish I were around Washington to see it... but wishful thinking. I really admire your versatility, jumping from one thing to the other without any apparent difficulty.

Hi Jane--It's so nice to hear from you. I thought they all bloomed at once too, but come to find out, there are all kinds of varieties that bloom throughout the season. In fact any time you go it really is extraordinary even through the fall. The colors are surreal. Thanks for your kind comments.
Hi Sam--I feel lighter than air. Time to whip up some of my secret formula and plaster up some panels. In the meantime do come to the USNA, and don't forget the art dog.

Landscape architecture was a thought at one time--now I just do it to drive my gardener crazy with my drawings.
Did you do the layout plan and then this perspective illustration? Doesn't matter. What I admire about your art is that you have stuck with mediums you know. I'm starting to think I should do that to.

My Japanese Dogwood doesn't bloom till we're into June.

I so wanted you to see this, not only because it's architectural in a way, but because it's new and contemporaneous.
If I'm understanding your question correctly, this Collection has been in existence for decades. The assignment was to create a way-finding piece, fairly accurate in terms of features and in an artistically showy manner for promotional purposes. It started with several perspective views in thumbnail form and then the development sequence in pencil for content, and finally this.
As far as sticking with the tried and true, everybody's got to get out once in a while.
If your buddy's any kind of a gardner, the USNA is Disneyland. Go with her!
Yes everybody should see the Arboretum. I understand why you sometimes use surgical loupes. Amazing drawing--and only two cars in the parking lot.
